CICONIIFORMES: Ardeidae
Ixobrychus minutus
Our first view of the Australian Little Bittern was this quick flight from north to south across the pond which we observed from the footbridge at 9.20 in the morning.
The bird was striking, not only because of its beautiful colours, but because it was so much smaller than I expected.
Despite seeing roughly where it landed in the reeds, another four hours of watching the area failed to yield any more views of the bittern.
